FridayNightPulse Training Tip: Tight End Power Development
At top programs like St. Marys Blue Devils, tight ends are expected to be physical and dominant in the trenches. One drill that can help develop the necessary power is the 'Box Squat Block' drill. Players start in a box squat position with their feet shoulder-width apart and hands on the ground. On the coach's cue, they explosively drive upwards and block an imaginary defender. The key is to focus on extending the hips and driving through the ground. Perform 3 sets of 8 reps, resting for 60 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'Drive through the ground' and 'Extend the hips.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a tight end's ability to generate power and control in the blocking scheme, allowing them to seal the edge and create running lanes.
