Boosting Kickoff Coverage: The Spring Mills Cardinals' Kicker Pursuit Drill
As the Spring Mills Cardinals prepare for the upcoming season, special teams coach Ryan Thompson emphasizes the importance of kickoff coverage. To improve their pursuit angles and speed, Thompson has implemented the Kicker Pursuit Drill. This high-intensity exercise consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Players line up 10 yards apart, with the kicker at the 30-yard line. The kicker kicks the ball, and the players must chase down the returner, focusing on maintaining a 45-degree angle and explosive acceleration. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the returner' and 'drive through the ball.' This drill translates to game performance by improving players' ability to quickly close the gap and make tackles, a crucial aspect of kickoff coverage.
