Power Through Contact: A RB Drilling for A-Program Success

๐Ÿ“ St. Marys Blue DevilsยทSunday, July 26, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At top-ranked programs like St. Marys Blue Devils, the key to dominating on the ground is not just speed, but the ability to power through contact. To develop this crucial skill, RBs will run the 'Trench Drill'. Set up five stations: a blocking sled, a tackling pad, a box jump, a lateral shuffle, and a 10-yard sprint. In a 30-minute session, have RBs complete 3 sets of 5 reps at each station, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues: 'Drive through the sled', 'stay low and explosive', 'jump high and land soft', 'shuffle feet, not body', and 'explosive acceleration'. This drill translates to game performance by building RBs' ability to break tackles, change direction quickly, and accelerate through holes. By incorporating the Trench Drill into their pre-season training, RBs at A programs like St. Marys will be ready to take on the toughest defenses.
