Boosting Kickoff Coverage for AA Programs: The Bridgeport Indians' 3-Step Tackle Drill

๐Ÿ“ Bridgeport IndiansยทTuesday, July 28, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For kick specialists at AA programs like the Bridgeport Indians, mastering kickoff coverage is crucial. To develop this skill, Coach Thompson recommends the 3-Step Tackle Drill. This drill focuses on quick reaction, aggressive pursuit, and proper tackling technique. The setup: two kickers, one as the return specialist and the other as the lead tackler. The kicker starts 10 yards deep, with the return specialist 5 yards deep. On the whistle, the kicker kicks the ball, and the lead tackler must cover 3 steps to reach the return specialist. The tackler must then wrap up the return specialist with a 2-point stance, focusing on keeping the head up and driving through the tackle. Perform 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 2-minute rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time, increasing aggressiveness, and refining tackling technique.
