Boosting Kicking Distance with the 3-Step Approach

๐Ÿ“ Spring Mills CardinalsยทWednesday, July 29, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At AA programs like Spring Mills Cardinals, kicker development is crucial for game-day success. To improve kicking distance, we recommend incorporating the 3-Step Approach drill into your pre-season training. This drill targets the key components of a powerful kick: approach speed, plant foot placement, and follow-through. Set up a series of cones 5 yards apart, with a final cone marking the kicking spot. Have your kicker start 10 yards back, take 3 steps forward, and focus on planting their non-kicking foot directly behind the ball. Aim for 5 sets of 10 reps, with a 2-minute rest between sets. Coaching cues include: 'Step, Plant, Strike' and 'Keep your eyes on the target.' This drill translates to game performance by increasing approach speed and accuracy, allowing kickers to generate more power and distance on their kicks.
