Quarterback Readiness: The 'Rapid Release' Drill
For St. Marys Blue Devils quarterback prospects, the 'Rapid Release' drill is a crucial component of pre-season training. This drill focuses on quick decision-making and accurate passing under pressure. To set up the drill, divide the quarterbacks into pairs with one ball per pair. Set up two cones 5 yards apart, with a defender 3 yards behind the cones. On the whistle, the quarterback must read the defender's alignment and quickly release the ball to their partner. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the defender' and 'release the ball before the defender takes a step.' This drill translates to game performance by simulating the pressure and decision-making required in live situations, allowing quarterbacks to develop the speed and accuracy needed to succeed at the A program level.
