Tight End Training Tip: 'Slant and Go' Drill for 4A TE's
As the Plainsmen prepare for the upcoming season, Tight End Coach, John Smith, emphasizes the importance of mastering the 'Slant and Go' drill. This drill targets the TE's ability to quickly release off the line, create separation, and accelerate down the field. To run the drill, divide the TEs into pairs with one ball carrier and one defender. Set up a 10-yard line with two cones 5 yards apart. The ball carrier starts at the line, the defender at the cone. On the snap, the ball carrier runs a slant route, then quickly accelerates to the second cone. The defender must react and pursue. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues: 'Release, release, release' and 'Go, go, go.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the TE's ability to quickly create separation and accelerate down the field, making them a more effective target for the QB.
