Boosting Kicking Distance with the 'Step-Up' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Service CougarsยทSunday, July 19, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For kickers at 4A programs like the Service Cougars, building leg strength and power is crucial for achieving maximum distance. The 'Step-Up' drill targets the glutes and hamstrings, key muscles for kicking. Have the kicker stand with their dominant foot on a 12-inch step or platform, holding a medicine ball or weight. In a controlled motion, step up onto the step with their non-dominant foot, then step back down to the starting position. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cue: 'Drive through your heel and explode upward.' This drill translates to game performance by increasing leg power and stability, allowing kickers to generate more force and achieve greater distance on their kicks. Incorporate the 'Step-Up' drill into your pre-season training to give your kicker an edge.
