Defensive Back Drill: 'Shadow and React' for 4A CBs
The 'Shadow and React' drill is a crucial exercise for cornerbacks at 4A programs like Dimond Lynx. This drill improves reaction time, footwork, and ball skills. To run the drill, set up a series of cones in a zig-zag pattern. Divide the players into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the cornerback. The receiver starts at the first cone, and the cornerback starts 5-7 yards off. On the coach's signal, the receiver runs through the course, and the cornerback must 'shadow' the receiver, staying in phase. The cornerback then 'reacts' to a coach-thrown ball, making a play on the ball. Start with 3 sets of 10 reps, increasing to 5 sets of 15 reps as players build endurance. Coaching cues include 'stay in phase' and 'react quickly.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the cornerback's ability to stay with receivers and make plays on the ball.
