Shedding Defenders: Thompson Warriors' WR Drill for Summer Camp

๐Ÿ“ Thompson WarriorsยทThursday, July 9, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For wide receivers at top 7A programs like the Thompson Warriors, creating separation from defenders is key to success. To improve this skill, coaches can implement the 'Release and Run' drill during summer camp. Divide the receivers into pairs, with one player as the 'release' and the other as the 'defender.' The release player starts in a three-point stance, with the defender in a press alignment. On the coach's signal, the release player explodes off the line, using a 'pop' step to create separation. The defender must react quickly to stay in position. The drill consists of 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by teaching receivers to quickly create separation and get off the line, making them more effective in the passing game.
