Boosting Kickoff Coverage for 7A K-Powerhouses: Hoover Buccaneers' Summer Drill

๐Ÿ“ Hoover BuccaneersยทSunday, July 12, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For 7A programs like the Hoover Buccaneers, kickoff coverage is a crucial aspect of their game plan. To improve their team's ability to contain opposing kickoffs, the coaching staff has developed a drill that targets speed, agility, and tackling skills. The 'Kicker Pursuit' drill involves three players: a kicker, a blocker, and a tackler. The kicker starts 10 yards deep, while the blocker sets up 5 yards in front of the kicker. The tackler, wearing a weighted vest, starts 5 yards behind the blocker. The kicker kicks the ball, and the tackler must chase down the blocker, who is attempting to block the tackler. The drill consists of 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 2-minute rest period between sets. Coaching cues include 'stay low,' 'keep your eyes on the ball,' and 'drive through the tackle.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the team's ability to contain kickoff returns and create turnovers.
