Route Running Precision for 7A WRs: The '5-7-5' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Hoover BuccaneersยทWednesday, July 15, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At top-tier 7A programs like Hoover's Buccaneers, receivers need to be precise in their route running to outmaneuver opponents. The '5-7-5' drill helps refine this skill. Set up four cones in a square formation, with one cone in the center. Divide the receivers into pairs, with one player as the 'runner' and the other as the 'coach.' The runner starts at the center cone, takes 5 steps to the left, then 7 steps to the right, and finally 5 steps back to the center. The coach provides real-time feedback on footwork, hand placement, and body positioning. Repeat for 3 sets of 3 reps. This drill translates to game performance by improving the receiver's ability to quickly change direction and maintain speed while maintaining control of the ball.
