This summer, wide receivers at 5A programs like the Saguaro Sabercats are focusing on developing their route-running skills with the 'Route Runner' drill. The drill consists of 3 sets of 5 reps, with 30 seconds rest in between sets. Players start at the line of scrimmage, then run a 5-yard out route, cutting sharply at a 45-degree angle. As they reach the top of the route, they immediately transition into a 10-yard in route, using a smooth, fluid motion. Coaches should emphasize proper footwork, keeping the inside foot 'kicking' and the outside foot 'pushing.' This drill translates to game performance by improving WRs' ability to quickly change direction and accelerate out of breaks, making them a more elusive target for defenders.
