Scorched Earth: Desert Edge Scorpions WR Drill for Dominance
This week, Desert Edge Scorpions WR coach, John Smith, shared with us his go-to drill to get his receivers ready for the 5A season. The 'Scorched Earth' drill is designed to improve route-running precision, footwork, and separation from defenders. The drill consists of 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Players line up 10 yards apart, with a defender at each end. On the whistle, the receiver runs a 5-yard out route, then immediately cuts back to the starting point. The defender must stay 5 yards off the receiver's back, forcing the receiver to accelerate and change direction quickly. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the defender' and 'quick feet.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing receivers to develop the agility and speed needed to create separation and make big plays downfield.
