Perry Pumas' Pre-Season RB Drill: Building Speed and Elusiveness
At 6A programs like the Perry Pumas, running backs need to be fast, elusive, and agile to break through defenses. To improve these skills, the Pumas' coaching staff has developed a drill that targets speed, agility, and reaction time. The 'L-Drill' involves setting up three cones in an L-shape, with the first cone 5 yards from the starting point, the second cone 10 yards away, and the third cone 15 yards away. Runners start at the first cone, then weave through the second cone, and finally cut back to the third cone. They repeat this process for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include 'quick feet' and 'change of direction.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a runner's ability to accelerate and decelerate quickly, making them more difficult to tackle.
