CB Clinic: Maloney Spartans' 'Shadow Shufflers' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Maloney SpartansยทWednesday, July 8, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

To improve reaction time and footwork for cornerbacks at the lower-level programs like Maloney Spartans, Coach Thompson recommends the 'Shadow Shufflers' drill. This drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest in between sets. Players line up 5 yards apart, with one player designated as the 'shadow' and the other as the 'runner'. The runner starts at the line of scrimmage, while the shadow starts 5 yards deep. On the snap, the runner sprints towards the shadow, who must quickly shuffle to stay in coverage. Coaching cues include 'stay low' and 'keep your eyes on the ball'. This drill translates to game performance by improving the CB's ability to quickly react to the receiver's movement and stay in coverage.
