Unlock Downfield Separation: Fairfield Prep Jesuits' WR Drill
To develop downfield separation for wide receivers at the lower level, Fairfield Prep Jesuits' coaching staff employs a drill that targets footwork, speed, and body control. 'The Box Drill' requires receivers to start in a 3-yard box, with their feet shoulder-width apart. On the coach's signal, they explosively sprint 5 yards downfield, then quickly change direction and accelerate to the left or right, maintaining a 45-degree angle. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'Fast feet, fast hands' and 'Keep your eyes on the target.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a receiver's ability to create separation and accelerate past defenders. It also enhances their agility and reaction time, making them a more effective downfield threat.
