Smyrna Eagles Linebacker Drill: 'The Circle of Chaos'

๐Ÿ“ Smyrna EaglesยทFriday, July 10, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

To prepare Smyrna Eagles linebackers for the high-intensity, fluid nature of Division I football, defensive coordinator, Mike Smith, has implemented a drill that tests speed, agility, and reaction time. 'The Circle of Chaos' consists of a 10-foot diameter circle with four cones placed evenly around its perimeter. Players start in the center, where a coach will randomly throw a football to any of the four cones. The linebacker must quickly identify the target, change direction, and close the distance to the cone in 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the ball' and 'explosive acceleration.' This drill translates to game performance by replicating the quick decision-making and rapid movement required to cover tight ends and running backs in space.
