Spartan Speed: WR Drill for St. Mark's Spartans
This summer, St. Mark's Spartans WRs can take their game to the next level with the 'Route Runner' drill. Set up four cones in a zig-zag pattern, 10 yards apart. Divide the team into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the defender. The receiver must run through the course, changing direction quickly and maintaining top-end speed. The defender must stay in phase, using hand placement and footwork to stay with the receiver. Perform 3 sets of 5 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'Keep your eyes on the defender' and 'Drive through the turn.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a WR's ability to quickly change direction and maintain speed, making them a more elusive target for defenders. It also enhances their ability to read coverage and make adjustments on the fly.
