Boosting Kickoff Coverage for 3A K Players: The 'Piggyback' Drill
For Chaminade-Madonna Lions and other 3A programs, kickoff coverage is a critical aspect of game strategy. To improve their ability to tackle returning kickoffs, coaches can implement the 'Piggyback' drill. This drill involves two players, one as the tackler and the other as the 'piggyback,' who starts 5-7 yards behind the tackler. The piggyback's goal is to mirror the tackler's movements, staying within 1-2 yards of their back. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'stay on their hip' and 'mirror their movement.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the ability to read the returner's movement and stay in position to make the tackle. It also enhances the player's reaction time and agility.
