Unlocking Speed and Agility for DEs: The St. Thomas Aquinas Speed Shuttle

๐Ÿ“ St. Thomas Aquinas RaidersยทTuesday, July 7, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

This summer, 5A powerhouses like St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders are focusing on enhancing their defensive ends' speed and agility. The Speed Shuttle drill is a game-changer. Set up four cones in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart. Players start at one end, then shuttle to the next cone, backpedaling to the previous cone, and repeat. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues: 'Fast feet, quick hands!' and 'Change direction, not speed!' This drill translates to game performance by improving DEs' ability to quickly close gaps and pursue ballcarriers. It also enhances their reaction time and agility in tight spaces. By incorporating the Speed Shuttle into their pre-season training, DEs will be better equipped to dominate on the field.
