Boosting Kicking Distance with the 'Drop Step' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Mill Creek HawksยทMonday, July 6, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For kickers at 7A programs like Mill Creek Hawks, building power and accuracy is crucial. One effective drill to improve kicking distance is the 'Drop Step' drill. K kickers will start 10 yards back from the kicking tee, with their non-kicking foot forward. On the snap, they'll drop their kicking foot into place, keeping their weight transfer quick and explosive. The kicker will then focus on a smooth, arcing motion, keeping their plant foot firm and their kicking leg generating maximum power. Aim for 3 sets of 5 reps, with 2 minutes rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by promoting a quick weight transfer and powerful leg drive, allowing kickers to generate more distance on their kicks. Coaches can also add a twist by having kickers kick from different angles and distances.
