Cadet QBs Get Ready with the 'Read and React' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Benedictine CadetsยทWednesday, July 29, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the Benedictine Cadets prepare for the upcoming 4A season, quarterback coach Tom Harris has been putting his signal-callers through a series of drills to sharpen their skills. One of the most effective is the 'Read and React' drill, designed to simulate the chaos of a live game. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Players line up 5 yards off the line of scrimmage, with a defender at the line and a receiver 10 yards downfield. Coach Harris yells out a play, and the QB must read the defense and react. If the defense shows blitz, the QB must audible to a check-down. If the defense drops into coverage, the QB must throw to the receiver. This drill translates to game performance by forcing the QB to think on their feet and make quick decisions under pressure.
