Crusaders WR Drill: Route Running at Speed
At the Saint Louis Crusaders, we're focusing on developing our wide receivers' ability to run routes at top speed. This drill, called 'Rapid Routes,' targets quick cuts and sharp breaks. Set up a series of cones in a zigzag pattern, 5 yards apart. Have your WRs start at the first cone, sprint to the second, and then make a 45-degree cut to the third. They should repeat this pattern, focusing on explosive acceleration and deceleration. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'Fast feet, sharp cuts' and 'Accelerate, then brake.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing WRs to quickly change direction and get open against defenders. It also improves their ability to read coverage and make adjustments on the fly.
