Saint Louis Crusaders CBs: Master the 'Shadow' Drill for Game-Day Success

๐Ÿ“ Saint Louis CrusadersยทMonday, July 20, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

The 'Shadow' drill is a staple for cornerbacks at Open programs like Saint Louis Crusaders, and for good reason. This exercise simulates the game-day scenario where a CB must mirror the receiver's every move, all while staying one step ahead. To run the drill: Set up two cones 10 yards apart, with a receiver positioned at one cone. The CB starts at the other cone, 5 yards back. On the coach's signal, the receiver sprints 5 yards, then immediately cuts back towards the CB. The CB must mirror the receiver's cut, staying 3-4 yards off their shoulder. Complete 3 sets of 5 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues: 'Shadow the receiver, don't chase them.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the CB's ability to read the receiver's body language and stay in phase with their movements.
