Quarterback Quick Release: A Summer Drill for 4A Programs
As the Dowling Catholic Maroons prepare for the upcoming season, quarterback development is crucial. A key drill to improve quick release is the 'Rapid Fire' exercise. Divide the quarterbacks into pairs, with one player as the thrower and the other as the receiver. Set up three to five targets, spaced 5-7 yards apart, with the receiver at each station. The thrower will start at the first target and must release the ball within 2 seconds. After each throw, the receiver will move to the next target. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include: 'Quick feet, quick release,' and 'Focus on the target.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the quarterback's ability to quickly diagnose defenses and deliver the ball to the correct receiver, increasing the chances of a successful play.
