Route Running Precision for 4A WRs
At Dowling Catholic Maroons football camps, wide receiver drills focus on precision and speed. One effective exercise is the '5-Yard Slant Drill.' Set up four cones in a square formation, three yards apart. Have WRs start at the top cone, then sprint to the second cone, planting their outside foot and turning quickly to the third cone. They should catch a pass from a quarterback at the fourth cone. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include: 'Keep your eyes on the quarterback,' 'Plant and turn, don't just cut,' and 'Catch with your hands, not your body.' This drill translates to game performance by improving WRs' ability to read defenders and make sharp cuts on short routes. It also enhances their timing with the quarterback and ball-handling skills.
