Quarterback Readiness: The 'RPO Read' Drill for 4A Programs

๐Ÿ“ West Des Moines Valley TigersยทFriday, July 10, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

Quarterbacks at 4A programs like West Des Moines Valley Tigers can improve their decision-making and accuracy with the 'RPO Read' drill. This drill focuses on reading the defense and identifying run-pass options (RPOs). To set up, divide your quarterbacks into pairs with one quarterback as the signal-caller and the other as the receiver. The signal-caller will call out a play, and the receiver will react accordingly. The coach will then call out a defensive alignment, and the quarterback must read the defense and make a decision to hand off or pass. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'Read the hat' and 'Make a quick decision.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching quarterbacks to quickly identify defensive schemes and make accurate decisions under pressure.
