Boost Your Tackling Ability with the 'Box Drill'
For Linebackers at 5A Programs like the Boise Brave, a key component of a successful defense is the ability to tackle effectively. The 'Box Drill' is a high-intensity exercise that targets this skill. To set up the drill, divide the linebackers into pairs with one player as the ball carrier and the other as the tackler. The ball carrier starts at the line of scrimmage and the tackler lines up 5 yards deep. On the whistle, the ball carrier attempts to break through the tackler's block and reach the 5-yard mark. The tackler must wrap up the ball carrier and bring them to the ground. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 2-minute rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'Wrap it up!' and 'Finish the tackle!' This drill translates to game performance by improving the linebackers' ability to quickly close the gap and secure the tackle, a crucial aspect of defensive success.
