As the Rigby Trojans prepare for the upcoming 5A season, quarterback coach, Mike Johnson, emphasizes the importance of precise footwork and situational awareness. The '5-Step Drop and Scan' drill is a crucial component of their pre-season training. To execute this drill, quarterbacks will start in a shotgun formation, 5 yards deep. On the snap, they will drop back 5 steps, keeping their eyes downfield, and scan the defense for open receivers. They will then quickly scan the sideline, looking for a check-down option. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'eyes downfield, scan the defense, and check the sideline.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching quarterbacks to quickly read the defense and identify open receivers, making them more effective in game situations.
