Boosting Kickoff Coverage: Mount Carmel Caravan's Kicker Pursuit Drill

๐Ÿ“ Mount Carmel CaravanยทSaturday, July 4, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the Mount Carmel Caravan prepares for the 2026 season, special teams coach John Smith emphasizes the importance of kickoff coverage. To improve their pursuit angles and speed, the team will be running the Kicker Pursuit Drill. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 2-minute rest between sets. Players line up 10 yards from the kicker, who is set up 10 yards deep. On the snap, the kicker takes 3-4 steps back and kicks the ball. The coverage unit must pursue the ball carrier, focusing on maintaining a 45-degree angle. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the ball' and 'stay low.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the team's ability to contain the returner and limit big plays. By the end of the summer, the Caravan's kickoff coverage unit will be faster and more aggressive.
