Kicker Prep for 7A Programs: The 'Drop Step' Drill
As the 2026 season approaches, kickers at 7A programs like St. Rita Mustangs are gearing up for a high-stakes year. One drill that can help them prepare is the 'Drop Step' drill. This exercise targets the kicker's ability to plant their non-kicking foot and generate power. To run the drill, have the kicker stand 10 yards from the kicking tee and take 3-5 steps back, dropping their non-kicking foot to the ground with each step. After the final step, they should explosively kick the ball. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include keeping the non-kicking foot 'glued' to the ground and using the legs to generate power. This drill translates to game performance by improving the kicker's ability to plant and generate power, leading to more consistent and accurate kicks.
