Unlocking Separation: A WR Drill for 5A Programs
As the summer heats up, wide receivers at 5A programs like Westfield Shamrocks are focusing on developing the skills that will set them apart from defenders. One key drill to add to your training regimen is the 'Release and Run' drill. This drill targets the WR's ability to quickly release off the line and create separation from the defender. To set up, have the WR line up 5 yards off the line, facing a defender who is 5 yards deep. On the coach's signal, the WR must explode off the line, using a 3-step drop to create separation. The WR should focus on keeping their inside foot down and using their outside arm to shield the defender. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving the WR's ability to quickly get open and create opportunities for big plays.
