FridayNightPulse: LB Drill for 6A Programs
At the top 6A programs like Center Grove Trojans, linebackers need to be prepared for the physicality of the game. One drill that can help improve their performance is the 'Reaction to the Ball' drill. This drill focuses on the linebacker's ability to quickly read the play and react to the ball carrier. To set up the drill, divide the linebackers into pairs with one player as the ball carrier and the other as the linebacker. The ball carrier will start at the line of scrimmage and the linebacker will start 5 yards deep. On the snap, the ball carrier will take a few steps forward and then cut back to the left or right. The linebacker must react quickly and make a tackle. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps on each side. Coaching cue: 'Get your eyes on the ball, read the play, and finish!' This drill translates to game performance by improving the linebacker's ability to quickly read the play and react to the ball carrier, resulting in more tackles and a stronger defensive unit.
