Fire Up Your Route Running: A 6A WR Drill for Lawrence Free State Firebirds
The Firebirds' wide receivers are gearing up for a strong 6A season, and a key component of their pre-season training is the 'Route Box Drill'. This high-intensity workout targets the quick cuts and sharp changes of direction that WRs need to excel on the field. Set up a 10x10 grid with cones and have your WRs start at one corner. On the whistle, they must sprint to the opposite corner, performing a specific route (e.g. 'out' or 'in') while maintaining a tight, low stance. Repeat for 3 sets of 5 reps, focusing on explosive acceleration and rapid changes of direction. Coaching cues: 'Fast feet, sharp cuts!' and 'Stay low, stay quick!' This drill translates to game performance by improving WRs' ability to quickly separate from defenders and get into position for big plays.
