Building a Fortress: Covington Catholic Colonels' OL Drill

This summer, Coach Mike Herndon of Covington Catholic Colonels is putting his 5A OL through a crucial drill to build a stronger, more cohesive unit. The '3-Step Anchor' drill targets footwork, hand placement, and body positioning. Players start in a 3-point stance, then step forward with their inside foot and transfer their weight onto it. Next, they step to the side with their outside foot, keeping their inside knee bent at a 90-degree angle. Finally, they step back to the original position, keeping their weight evenly distributed. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues: 'Step, transfer, step' and 'Knee bent, weight back.' This drill translates to game performance by improving OL's ability to quickly react to defensive movements and maintain a strong anchor point.
