Defensive End Dominance: The 'Rip and Shed' Drill
As the 6A season approaches, defensive ends at top programs like Male Bulldogs must refine their skills to take down opponents. The 'Rip and Shed' drill targets the essential techniques of hand fighting and disengagement. Set up a 10-yard line with two cones 5 yards apart. Have the defensive end start in a 3-point stance with their hands inside the cones. On the whistle, the defender 'rip's' the opponent's hands with their inside arm, then 'sheds' the block by quickly stepping past with their outside foot. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on speed and agility. Coaching cues include 'rip and go' and 'step past, don't get past.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing defensive ends to quickly disengage from blocks and pursue the quarterback or ballcarrier, creating turnovers and game-changing plays.
