'Shut and Recover': A CB Drill for 5A Programs
This summer, Catholic High Bears cornerbacks can improve their shutdown skills with the 'Shut and Recover' drill. Set up a 10-yard cone course with two cones 5 yards apart. Have players start at the first cone, then sprint to the second cone, planting their outside foot and turning their body to face the quarterback. Immediately, they must recover back to the first cone, using their inside foot to drive off the ground. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include 'drive with your outside foot' and 'keep your eyes on the quarterback.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching cornerbacks to quickly change direction and maintain their focus on the ball. It also simulates the burst of speed needed to stay with receivers down the field.
