Boosting Defensive End Production: The 'Rip and Recover' Drill
As the 4A season approaches, defensive ends at programs like St. Augustine Purple Knights need to refine their skills to dominate on the field. The 'Rip and Recover' drill is a crucial exercise that targets speed, agility, and strength. To run this drill, set up three cones in a zigzag pattern, 5 yards apart. Defensive ends will start at the first cone and sprint to the second, 'ripping' through the space with their inside foot. Immediately, they must change direction and recover to the third cone, mimicking a tackle. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest in between. Coaching cues include: 'Rip through the gap,' 'Change direction quickly,' and 'Recover with your outside foot.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a defensive end's ability to quickly change direction and pursue the ball carrier, making them a more formidable force on the field.
