Explosive Power for RBs: The 'Eagle Leap' Drill
At 5A programs like Evangel Christian Eagles, running backs need to be explosive and powerful to break tackles and gain yards after contact. The 'Eagle Leap' drill is designed to improve RBs' ability to explosively jump and change direction. To set up the drill, mark three cones in a zig-zag pattern. Have the RB start at the first cone, then jump over the second cone and land on both feet before jumping over the third cone. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues: 'Explode off the ground,' 'Land soft on both feet,' and 'Change direction quickly.' This drill translates to game performance by improving RBs' ability to explosively jump over defenders and quickly change direction to find open lanes. It also helps build power and speed, essential for RBs to break tackles and gain yards after contact.
