Route Running Mastery: Xaverian Brothers Hawks' WR Drill
At the top Div I programs like Xaverian Brothers Hawks, wide receiver coaches are always looking for ways to improve their players' route running skills. One drill that has shown promise is the 'Speed Box' drill. Players line up in a 5-yard box, with cones marking the corners. The coach calls out a specific route (e.g. slant, out, or deep post), and the player must quickly change direction and run the route. The twist: the coach will call out a specific speed (e.g. 'fast', 'slow', or 'change of pace') and the player must adjust their speed accordingly. Sets: 3 rounds of 10 reps each. Reps: Each player runs 10 routes, with 30 seconds rest between routes. Coaching cues: 'Quick feet', 'change of pace', and 'speed control'. This drill translates to game performance by improving a player's ability to quickly read the defense and adjust their speed to create separation.
