Lock Down the Competition: A CB Drill for A Programs
For cornerbacks at top programs like Bangor Rams, mastering the 'Shadow and Mirror' drill can be a game-changer. This exercise targets footwork, agility, and reaction time, all essential skills for lockdown coverage. To run the drill, set up four cones in a square formation, 5 yards apart. Have the CB start at one cone, with a teammate or coach playing the role of the receiver. On the coach's signal, the CB must 'shadow' the receiver, staying 2-3 yards off their back. As the receiver cuts, the CB must 'mirror' their movements, keeping their body aligned with the receiver's. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Focus on quick, light steps and staying balanced. This drill translates to game performance by improving the CB's ability to stay with receivers on cuts and maintain tight coverage. It's a must-include in any top program's offseason training plan.
