Finishing Moves: A Defensive End Drill for 6A Programs
Defensive ends at 6A programs like Starkville Yellow Jackets need to be explosive and agile to take down opponents. To improve their finishing skills, coaches can run the 'Rush and React' drill. Set up a series of cones to create a 5-yard by 5-yard grid. Defensive ends will start at the edge of the grid, then rush towards the quarterback (or a blocking pad) for 3 seconds. As they reach the quarterback, they must quickly change direction and react to a fake handoff, mimicking a running back's move. This drill should be performed for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include 'Finish the play' and 'React quickly.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching defensive ends to quickly close the gap and adjust to unexpected moves, making them more effective pass rushers and run defenders.
