Route Running Precision for 5A WRs: The '5-7-5' Drill
As the West Point Green Wave prepares for another competitive 5A season, wide receiver coach, Mike Johnson, emphasizes the importance of precise route running. To improve this skill, Johnson's team will be running the '5-7-5' drill throughout the summer. The drill consists of three sets of 5 reps each, with a 30-second rest period in between. Players will start at the line of scrimmage, take 5 steps to the left, then 7 steps to the right, and finally 5 steps back to the original position. Coaching cues include 'inside foot, outside foot' and 'keep your eyes on the quarterback.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a WR's ability to quickly change direction and maintain focus on the quarterback, ultimately leading to more efficient and effective routes.
