Kicker Prep: The 'Step-Up' Drill for Consistent Distance
As the 6A season approaches, kickers at programs like Madison Central Jaguars need to fine-tune their technique to maintain a competitive edge. The 'Step-Up' drill targets the key components of a powerful kick: leg drive, core engagement, and follow-through. Set up 3-4 cones in a zigzag pattern, 10 yards apart. Start with 3 sets of 10 reps. Kicker begins at the first cone, takes 3 steps back, then explosively kicks the ball, keeping the plant foot grounded. Focus on driving through the ball with the non-kicking foot and keeping the kicking leg extended. After each rep, have the kicker step up onto the cone with their non-kicking foot, mimicking the motion of a game kick. This drill translates to game performance by improving leg strength, balance, and the ability to generate power from a stationary position.
