Unlocking Tight End Potential with the 'Box Out' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Olive Branch ConquistadorsยทTuesday, July 28, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For 6A programs like Olive Branch Conquistadors, dominating the tight end position requires a combination of strength, agility, and technique. To improve in these areas, Coach Thompson recommends the 'Box Out' drill. This exercise targets the TE's ability to seal the edge and create space in the passing game. Set up a series of 5x5 foot boxes, spaced 5 yards apart, with a defender at each corner. The TE starts at the first box, then sprints to the second, where they must box out the defender to secure a 3-yard rep. Complete 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 2-minute rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'Seal the edge!' and 'Protect the space!' This drill translates to game performance by teaching TEs to anticipate and react to defenders, creating separation and opportunities for their quarterback.
