Tight End Training for AA Programs: The 'Y' Route Drill
At AA programs like the Butte Bulldogs, tight ends must be versatile and reliable in the passing game. The 'Y' Route Drill is a key component of our summer training program, focusing on the fundamental skills required to excel in this position. The drill involves setting up three cones in a 'Y' formation, with the TE starting at the top cone. On the coach's signal, the TE must sprint down the middle cone, then quickly pivot and run a sharp 'Y' route to the outside cone. We aim for 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'release the defender' and 'high-point the ball.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the TE's ability to create separation and secure passes in traffic, making them a reliable target for our quarterback.
