Shelby's Smith Steals Spotlight
DeShawn Smith's arrival at Shelby High School last fall sent shockwaves through the 3A ranks. The Class of 2025 quarterback transferred from Georgia, where he played for a small private school. Yet, he quickly seized the starting role, leading the Golden Lions to a 7-4 record. Smith's impressive debut season was marked by a 62-yard touchdown pass in the season opener against rival Crest. He finished the year with 1,823 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Smith's ability to read defenses and extend plays with his feet has drawn comparisons to former NCHSAA Player of the Year, Michael Carter. As Shelby looks to build on last year's success, scouts will be watching to see if Smith can maintain his accuracy and decision-making under pressure. Can he reduce his turnovers and become a more consistent threat on the field?
