Unlocking Tight End Potential: The 'Box Out' Drill
As the Grimsley Whirlies prepare for the upcoming 4A season, tight end development is crucial. To improve blocking prowess and route-running precision, Coach Thompson recommends the 'Box Out' drill. Divide players into pairs, with one acting as the blocker and the other as the defender. Set up a 5-yard box with cones. The blocker must engage the defender, then 'box out' to create space for the receiver to run a 3-yard out route. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, rotating positions. Coaching cues include: 'Engage, don't lean,' and 'Box out, don't get caught inside.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching TEs to control their blocks and create separation in tight spaces. By mastering the 'Box Out,' Whirlies tight ends will become a force to be reckoned with in the 4A playoffs.
