Speed and Agility for S Players: The 5-Yard Shuttle Drill
At AAA programs like the Bismarck Demons, speed and agility are crucial for S players to excel on the field. One effective drill to improve these skills is the 5-Yard Shuttle. This drill targets quick changes of direction, acceleration, and deceleration, all essential for S players to effectively cover receivers and make tackles. To set up the drill, divide the field into two 5-yard sections with cones or markers. Have the player start at one end, then sprint to the other end, quickly change direction, and sprint back to the starting point. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include 'explosive start,' 'quick feet,' and 'aggressive change of direction.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing S players to develop the speed and agility needed to stay with receivers and make tackles in tight spaces.
